She stands behind the cash register, all day, everyday. Her cheeks sagging and russet, her hair coils of grease, her face sinking towards the shores of Tasmania. Those arms, all blotchy and puffy, with fingers like rosy chipolatas. Beep, Beeeeep, Beep, Beeeeep. An eternal refrain, the symphony of a zombie. Beep.

Our eyes meet, two grey marbles draped in sleet, “Flybuys?”.

I smile, and reply, “No”.

“Have a nice day…”

I leave.

Her life is a seagull flapping in the rain.
